Shopping bags to benefit environmental and
social responsibility non-profit agencies
The sale of shopping bags at Alcool NB Liquor will benefit
the non-profit conservation organization the Nature Conservancy
of Canada (NCC), and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada).
Alcool NB Liquor will donate 100 per cent of the proceeds
from its enhanced reusable and recyclable shopping bag to both agencies. The
bag will be manufactured in New Brunswick from 45 per cent recycled
material, and will be recyclable through
the province’s solid waste commissions’ blue box program. The new bag will
retail for five cents.
"Our reusable and recyclable bag will be made with more than
double the amount of recycled material of our current bag,"
said Dana Clendenning, president and chief executive officer of Alcool NB
Liquor. "We are proud to offer a made-in-New Brunswick solution that not
only offers the strength and durability required for our products, but is
also reusable for other purposes."
"NCC is happy to partner with Alcool NB Liquor," said Linda
Stephenson, regional vice-president, NCC Atlantic Region. "Proceeds from
this donation will go toward protecting New Brunswick’s most threatened
habitats and the plants and animals
that live there. Included among the more than 11,000 acres that NCC has
conserved in New Brunswick are the last fully functioning estuary along the
Bay of Fundy, the nesting habitat for the globally endangered piping plover,
and safe havens for hundreds of thousands of migrating shore birds."
"This commitment by Alcool New Brunswick Liquor is just one
example of their leadership in the area of social responsibility
and their efforts to help MADD Canada achieve our mission," says MADD
Canada’s Chief Executive Officer Andy Murie. "The additional support will
enable us to educate and engage more people in our work to end impaired
driving."
Alcool NB Liquor will continue to provide a complimentary
single-use paper bag, which is compostable and recyclable, and
will retail a new, four-bottle reusable canvas bag for $1.99 plus HST.
The 45 per cent recycled bags and the canvas bags will be
made available in corporate stores by mid-summer.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada is a national non-profit
conservation organization that works with landowners to protect Canada’s
natural habitats. Its plan of action is to build partnerships and develop
creative conservation solutions with
individuals, corporations, community groups, conservation groups and
government bodies. Since 1962, NCC and its
supporters have helped to protect over 11, 000 acres in New Brunswick and
over 2 million acres of ecologically significant
land across Canada.
MADD Canada (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is a national,
charitable organization that is committed to stopping impaired driving and
supporting the victims of this violent crime. With volunteer-driven groups
in more than 100 communities across Canada, MADD Canada aims to offer
support services to victims, heighten awareness of the dangers of impaired
driving and
save lives and prevent injuries on our roads.

Alcool NB Liquor launches domestic beer
Two new private label domestic beers are now
available to New Brunswick consumers. Alcool NB Liquor today became
the first liquor board in Canada to offer private label beer when it
launched its Selection brand.
"Selection Lager and Selection Light are
exciting new additions to Alcool NB Liquor’s beer portfolio," said Dana
Clendenning, president and CEO of Alcool NB Liquor. "We are proud to launch
these premium-quality, low-cost brands, which are brewed
for New Brunswickers by New Brunswickers. The Selection brands are brewed to
Alcool NB Liquor specifications, using
quality ingredients, and are slightly drier than the typical lager and light
beers, with a crisp,
dry taste. They are light-to
medium-bodied in colour, with a clean, fresh finish."
Alcool NB Liquor spokespersons acting as
brand ambassadors will be on-site in 16 stores throughout the province from
5-8 p.m. today. Customer tastings in all corporate stores will take place
from 5-8 p.m. today and tomorrow, March 13, and
from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 14.
Mainstream domestic beer volumes were down in
the latter half of 2008, due to the relatively poor summer weather, lower
tourism numbers, and pricing in neighbouring jurisdictions.
"The launch of these two canned domestic beer
products will guarantee that New Brunswick consumers have a low-cost,
high-quality choice," said Clendenning. "Both products retail for $18.67 for
12 cans (355 ml)."
Four ingredients were used to brew the
Selection brands: malt (barley), hops, water and yeast. The malt is 100 per
cent
western Canada barley. Two types of hops were used: the bittering hop,
Nuggets, and the aroma hop, Hallertau. The hop
bitters in both brands are lower than a typical lager, and a special New
Zealand hop was used to give the beer a slightly
spicier, grassy aroma. The fermentation temperature is slightly higher than
that for other lagers, creating slightly more
fruity and floral aromas.
Selection Lager and Selection Light are
brewed by Moosehead Breweries in Saint John, and are available at all ANBL
corporate stores and select agency stores. More information on both brands
may be found at
www.selectionlager.ca.

MADD Canada, Alcool NB Liquor and local police forces
partner to raise awareness for
Campaign 911
A spot-check event to raise awareness for
Campaign 911 will take place between 1-2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21. The
event
will be held by the Rothesay Regional and Saint John City Police forces, in
co-operation with MADD Canada and Alcool
NB Liquor, to inform the public on how to spot a suspected impaired driver,
then report the incident by calling 9-1-1.
"By educating the public on the possible
signs of an impaired driver, we’re sending a message that there will now be
thousands of eyes watching the road," said Dana Clendenning, president and
CEO, Alcool NB Liquor.
The public and private-sector partnership is
a local contribution to Canada’s Road Safety Vision 2010, which plans to
make
our roads the safest in the world, and reduce by 40 per cent the number of
drivers fatally or seriously injured by impaired
drivers.
"Our suspected impaired driving complaints
rose by 102 per cent in 2008, and our impaired driving charges dropped by
four per cent, so we’re starting to see the impact of our campaigns," said
Sgt. Evan Scott, Rothesay Regional Police
Force.
MADD Canada volunteers will be at the spot
check to hand out clip-on visor notebooks that list 10 possible ways to spot
an impaired driver. The notebooks will also be given out at all Alcool NB
Liquor stores, starting today.
"This joint event marks the first time that
MADD Canada has teamed up with a liquor jurisdiction and a local police
service
to promote the 9-1-1 campaign in Canada," said Andrew Murie, CEO, MADD
Canada. "We are extremely encouraged by
the efforts of these public service organizations to help us build awareness
of the campaign."
According to the Department of Public
Safety’s motor vehicle traffic collision statistics for 2007, 23 of the 111
drivers involved
in collisions that resulted in 89 fatalities in the province had been
drinking or were impaired.
Photo opportunities of the spot check will be
available from 1 - 2 p.m. at the entrance to the Irving Oil Refinery on the
Loch Lomand Road.

Don’t Buy For Minors!
A
poster campaign has been launched in all ANBL liquor stores, as well as
through NB Crime Stopper’s 21 chapters. The poster emphasizes that
supplying alcohol to minors is illegal, and if caught a person can be fined
up to $2,620 and/or face imprisonment for up to six months.
Alcool NB Liquor is a financial supporter of
NB Crime Stoppers, and together want to ensure only those individuals that
are 19 years and older are accessing our products.
ANBL maintains a province wide "CHECK 25" ID
program which requires store employees to check the identification of any
individual who appears to be under the age of 25 prior to being served.
Store employees are trained to refuse service to anyone who cannot provide
valid identification.
